This solar panel cost calculator estimates the system size, installed price range, subsidy, net cost and rough payback of a grid-connected rooftop system for a home in Noida or Greater Noida. Enter your average monthly electricity units, or your monthly bill, and optionally your shade-free roof area. Every assumption it uses is listed below with its source.

How the solar panel cost calculator works
The calculator follows the same steps you could do on paper:
- Your yearly use. Monthly units × 12. If you enter a bill instead, it first divides the bill by your tariff (₹6.50 a unit unless you change it) to estimate units.
- Suggested size. Yearly use ÷ (4 units per kW per day × 365 days), rounded to the nearest 0.5 kW, between 1 kW and 10 kW. If you enter your roof area, the size is limited to what fits at 108 sq ft per kW.
- Yearly generation. Size × 4 × 365.
- Price before subsidy. Size × ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 per kW, shown as a range.
- Central subsidy (CFA). ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW plus ₹18,000 for the third kW, capped at ₹78,000.
- UP state subsidy. ₹15,000 per kW for up to 2 kW, capped at ₹30,000.
- Net cost. Price minus both subsidies.
- Yearly saving. The units you would otherwise buy from the grid (the smaller of generation and use) × your tariff.
- Rough payback. Net cost ÷ yearly saving.
Example: a home using 450 units a month
Yearly use is 5,400 units. 5,400 ÷ (4 × 365) = 3.70 kW, which rounds to 3.5 kW. That size generates about 5,110 units a year and needs about 378 sq ft of shade-free roof. At ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 per kW the price is ₹1,75,000 to ₹2,10,000. Subtracting the ₹78,000 central subsidy and ₹30,000 state subsidy leaves ₹67,000 to ₹1,02,000. The saving is 5,110 × ₹6.50 = ₹33,215 a year, so the rough payback is about 2.0 to 3.1 years. A 3.5 kW system also needs a sanctioned load of about 3.5 kW; see net metering in UP for the size rules.
Assumptions and where they come from
| Assumption | Value used | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | 4 units (kWh) per kW per day | ChhatSolar planning value inside the range modelled by PVWatts for Noida (3.95) and Greater Noida (4.26) |
| Installed price | ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 per kW | MNRE benchmark and UPNEDA tentative price (lower end); reported market rate, March 2026 (upper end). See the 3 kW price guide |
| Central subsidy | ₹30,000 per kW (first 2 kW), ₹18,000 (3rd kW), cap ₹78,000 | PM Surya Ghar National Portal |
| UP state subsidy | ₹15,000 per kW, cap ₹30,000 | UP Solar Energy Policy 2022; still being paid as of UPNEDA’s list of 24 September 2026 |
| Roof area | 108 sq ft per kW | MNRE FAQ: 10 to 12 sq m per kW (10 sq m is about 108 sq ft) |
| Default tariff | ₹6.50 per unit | NPCL tariff FY 2026-27, domestic energy charge above 300 units a month |
Expected generation changes through the year. Modelled values for 1 kW in Greater Noida (south-facing, 25° tilt, 14% losses) are below; the calculator uses the yearly planning value of 4.
| Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.69 | 4.09 | 4.91 | 4.81 | 4.68 | 4.34 | 3.98 | 4.08 | 4.40 | 4.37 | 3.91 | 3.85 |
What the calculator does not include
- Slab tariffs and fixed charges. It values every saved unit at one tariff. If your saved units fall in cheaper slabs, the saving is smaller. Fixed charges and duty are not modelled.
- Year-end payouts. Surplus units credited at ₹2 on 31 March under net metering are ignored, which keeps the estimate conservative.
- Your sanctioned load. In UP your system cannot exceed it (apart from a small panel tolerance). Check your bill and raise the load first if needed.
- Shade, tilt and dust. The generation figure assumes a clean, unshaded, south-facing system.
- Loans, upkeep and ageing. Loan interest, cleaning, repairs after the vendor’s five-year maintenance period and panel degradation are not included.
- Subsidy status. It assumes both subsidies are paid in full. The state subsidy has no announced end date, so confirm it with UPNEDA.
Use the result to plan and to compare vendor quotes, not as a quote. The detail behind the subsidy figures is in our PM Surya Ghar subsidy and solar subsidy in UP guides, and the application steps are in how to apply for PM Surya Ghar.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this solar calculator for home use?
It gives a planning estimate. The subsidy amounts come straight from the official rules, but the price range, generation and tariff are averages. Actual quotes, roof conditions and your tariff slabs can move the result either way.
Why does the calculator assume 4 units per kW per day?
It is a yearly average for a clean, unshaded system in Noida and Greater Noida. Modelled output for the area is 3.95 to 4.26 units per kW per day, PIB says a 3 kW system makes more than 300 units a month, and MNRE quotes 4 to 5.5 units on clear sunny days.
Does the calculator include the UP state subsidy?
Yes. It adds ₹15,000 per kW up to ₹30,000, the UP state subsidy paid by UPNEDA to net-metered homes. UPNEDA was still publishing payment lists in September 2026, but no end date has been announced, so confirm it before you rely on it.
Can I use this solar calculator anywhere in India?
Partly. The central subsidy is the same in all general category states, but the state subsidy applies only in Uttar Pradesh, and the generation, price and tariff defaults are set for Noida and Greater Noida. Elsewhere, treat the result as a rough guide.
Why might my vendor suggest a different system size?
Vendors also consider your sanctioned load, the usable shade-free roof area, panel wattage and your future plans, such as an EV or air conditioners. The calculator sizes only to your past use, so compare its estimate with the vendor’s reasoning.
